From the boardroom to the backyard, balancing everything in your life can be tricky. While it’s easy to fall into the trap of living at your desk, taking the time to step away can make you happier, healthier and even more creative. Intrigued? Here are some tips for finding the perfect balance:
1. Your desk is not a lunch table
Just because you’re busy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make the most of your lunch hour. Eating while you stare at spreadsheets is no replacement for some fresh air and time to think. Even if you’re packing your lunch, try eating meals in the kitchen or on a picnic table outside. It might not seem like it at the time, but stepping away for a bit can allow you to recharge your batteries and generate solutions to problems that have stumped you all morning.
2. Work to live, don’t live to work
Sure there are times when you have to burn the midnight oil on a big presentation, but moderation is the key. It doesn’t take many 60-hour weeks to burn out even the hardest worker. Instead, try to work smarter, not just harder. A good night’s rest gives you a mental boost to solve the problems 4 cups of coffee can’t.
3. You have vacation days for a reason
It’s surprising how many people don’t make the most of their paid time off. Getting away, even if it’s just to check out a new museum in town or do some window shopping, does a body good. The important thing is to make sure the days you take off refresh you. If cleaning the house is your stress relief, more power to you. If not, don’t take a day off of work for more work.
More than anyone else, ladies know the challenges of balancing work with the rest of our lives. It’s not an easy process and it can take some trial and error, but the increase in your quality of life is beyond measure. Just remember, you’re always worth it.
